Picture this: a developer opens Claude Code and tells it to build a new project with background job processing, a transactional email provider, and a payments integration. The agent doesn't open a browser, search Google, compare pricing pages, or read a single blog post - it queries tool registries, parses API specs, evaluates CLI tooling, and selects the services that offer the clearest programmatic path to integration. Within minutes, three vendors have been chosen, API keys have been provisioned, and the initial integration is running. The developer whose product had the most complete machine-readable infrastructure won the deal, and the developer whose product required a human to visit a dashboard, click through a signup flow, and copy an API key from a settings page lost it, without ever knowing an evaluation happened.

Developers using coding agents like Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex are making these selections thousands of times a day. Enterprise teams are starting to do the same thing by deploying automation agents that provision infrastructure, select SaaS vendors, and configure entire environments without waiting for a human to approve each step. The question that most companies have not started asking themselves is whether their product is visible and usable through the channels these agents rely on. For most of them, the answer is no.

I have spent the past several months building Surfex around this problem, and the deeper I go, the more convinced I become that most companies are completely unprepared for the way software adoption is changing. The users showing up now are autonomous agents, and the criteria they use to evaluate you bear almost no resemblance to the signals that mattered when humans were the ones doing the research.

Agents Are the New Users, and Most Companies Cannot Serve Them

There are already a growing number of GEO and AEO tools that measure whether chatbots mention your brand when a human asks for a recommendation, and those are useful for marketing teams. The problem I am focused on is further downstream, and it involves a different type of user entirely.

When agents like Claude Code, Cursor, or an enterprise automation platform are selecting tools autonomously, they are not asking a chatbot for a recommendation and then browsing the results. They are querying registries, parsing API specs, invoking CLIs, and evaluating whether they can complete the full integration flow programmatically. The agent's selection criteria are entirely machine-readable, and most companies have never optimized for them because, until recently, nothing evaluated software this way.

Agent discoverability as a concept is straightforward: can an autonomous agent find your product through machine-readable channels, evaluate it programmatically, and integrate it without a human stepping in? The companies that can answer yes will be the ones agents select, and the rest will be invisible to an entire class of users that is only going to grow.

Agents Evaluate You Through Infrastructure Rather Than Content

An agent making an autonomous selection does not browse your website, read your blog posts, or care about your brand story. It evaluates you through machine-readable infrastructure: API specs, tool registries, CLI interfaces, programmatic onboarding flows, repository metadata, and agent-to-agent communication protocols. These are the six channels we audit at Surfex, because these are the channels where agents look when they make decisions on their own.

Most companies have significant gaps across these channels today. Some have partial infrastructure that appears complete on the surface but breaks when an agent tries to use it programmatically, while others have no presence in these channels at all.

The gap between having infrastructure and having infrastructure that agents can use is where most companies lose deals they never knew existed. A company might technically have an API spec, a CLI, or a registry listing, but if any of those are structured in ways that agents cannot parse or interact with reliably, the result is the exact same as not having them. We built the Surfex verification system around synthetic agents that simulate the complete discovery-to-integration flow for exactly this reason, rather than running a checklist of binary signals.

Beyond Developer Tools

The instinct when hearing about agent discoverability is to assume it only applies to developer tool companies with APIs. The scope is much, much broader than that.

Agents are beginning to operate across the full range of online services on behalf of the humans who deploy them. For example, an agent booking travel needs to interact with airline and hotel platforms programmatically. An agent managing procurement needs to evaluate vendors, compare options, and complete setup flows without a human clicking through screens. Any company that provides a product or service agents will need to access faces the same question: can an agent find you, evaluate you, and complete the workflow without a human stepping in to handle a browser, a CAPTCHA, or a phone call?

Developer tool companies feel this pressure first because their users are building with agents right now, and the infrastructure gaps are immediately measurable. The same dynamics will apply to SaaS platforms, e-commerce, financial services, and any business where autonomous agents become part of how products get found and adopted. The companies that build agent-compatible infrastructure early will be the ones that agents can work with, and the companies that wait will find out too late.

Most Companies Are Already Behind

A BBC investigation published in February 2026 found that a single fabricated blog post shifted the recommendations of both ChatGPT and Gemini within 24 hours of publication. That finding was about content manipulation of chatbot responses, which is a real problem on its own, but it also reveals something broader: AI systems are responsive to external signals in ways that most companies have not internalized yet. The same principle applies to the machine-readable infrastructure that autonomous agents use when selecting software. If a fake blog post can move chatbot recommendations overnight, the companies that start systematically optimizing their API specs, registry listings, and programmatic onboarding flows will have a compounding advantage over the ones still treating agent-facing infrastructure as an afterthought. McKinsey's 2025 State of AI report found that 62% of organizations are already working with AI agents and nearly a quarter are scaling them into production. The pool of autonomous software making these selection decisions grows every quarter, and most companies have not touched their agent-facing infrastructure at all.

First Movers Compound

The companies that make their products agent-discoverable before their competitors tend to hold that advantage for a long time, simply because the early work compounds. Once the proper infrastructure is in place, agents start finding and using your product, developers build integration patterns around it, and by the time competitors catch up to where you started, you have months or years of iteration and refinement that they have to replicate from scratch while the share of total software usage coming from agents continues to grow.

I started building Surfex because no one was measuring whether autonomous agents could find and integrate a product across the channels agents actually use. The traditional SEO tools were built for Google, the GEO tools measure whether chatbots mention your brand, the registry directories will list your service but will not tell you whether agents can find and integrate it, or how your discoverability compares to competitors over time. There was just no way to measure or improve how agents see your product - so we built one.
